Two Bangladeshi Project Wins 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture!

Bait Ur Roof Mosque By Marina Tabassum Architects And Friendship Center By Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA has been announced the winner of Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
PS: Two out of six winning projects are of Bangladesh.....It is clearly a sign of something specially in the arena of Bangladeshi architecture.

4.Superkilen, Copenhagen, Denmark / BIG + Topotek 1 + Superflex.

 5.Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge, Tehran, Iran / Diba Tensile Architecture, Leila Araghian + Alireza Behzadi.

6.Issam Fares Institute, Beirut, Lebanon / Zaha Hadid Architects.

 

Six exemplary projects have been announced as winners of the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Presented once every three years, the award was established by the Aga Khan in 1977 to “identify and encourage building concepts that successfully addressed the needs and aspirations of communities in which Muslims have a significant presence.” To be considered for the award, projects must exhibit not only architectural excellence, but also the ability to improve users overall quality of life.

 

Selected from a shortlist of 19 candidates, the five winning projects will receive a $1 million dollar prize as they join an acclaimed list of previous winners, which includes buildings from Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Charles Correa, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Hassan Fathy.

Biography: Architect Muzharul Islam

Muzharul Islam (Bengali: মাজহারুল ইসলাম ; 25 December 1923 – 15 July 2012) was a Bangladeshi architect, urban planner, educator and activist. He is considered as the Grand Master of regional modernism in South Asia. Islam is the pioneer of modern architecture in Bangladesh and the father of Bengali modernism.
